Armagh Juniors through to Semi's

Congratulations to the Armagh Junior Zone team who beat Oriel by 5 shots in a nail biting game in Cooley today.

In a game were the lead changed back and forth, it was Oriel who took a 4 shot lead into the last four ends of the game.

Armagh's Sean Breen was able to lift a 2 on his last end and after an excellent running shot by Andrew Robinson to ditch the jack to gain another 2 shots, this left the game all square with only 2 ends remaining on James Robinson's mat.
On the 9th end James played the perfect running shot with his last bowl to move the jack to the 4 waiting Armagh bowls to gain a vital 4 to put Armagh within sight of victory going 4 up into the last end.
The last end proved to be quite a dramatic end as Armagh tried to sow things up, Oriel's Shane Hand was forced to burn the jack twice with his last bowl to keep Oriel's hopes alive. On the 3rd replay of the last end it was Armagh that struggled and with only 1 bowl in the head, Shane Hand with the last bowl had a chance to 'chop and lie' the Armagh bowl to lie 5 shots and win the game. Luckily for Armagh, Shane was slightly wide and just clipped the Armagh bowl but did not move it, leaving Armagh the winners and heading onto the semi final stages.

It was a great team effort from the Armagh side and they showed their fighting spirit right up to the end!!

Well done guys!!

Armagh Ladies ease past East Antrim

Congratulations to Armagh Ladies today on a convincing 44 shot win over East Antrim.

After beating Oriel in the opening round Armagh knew they had to keep their momentum going against East Antrim in the 2nd round.

Armagh had to make 2 late changes in their team with Marlene Hobson and Diane Agnew withdrawing due to the death of club member Gertie Pearson and at this time we would like to pass on are condolences to the Pearson family.

On mat 1
Christina Dempster, Michelle Wright, Irene Doone and May Cassells made a steady start to their game but a run of successive ends gave the Armagh rink a win of 14-5.

Mat 2 saw Catherine McMillen's rink of Sophia Minish, Linda Milligan and Sadie White storm away to a 9-0 lead playing excellent bowls throughout. The East Antrim rink made a late charge but wasn't enough and Catherine ran out to a 14-6 win.

Agnes Crozier, Ann Patton, Hilary Agnew and Elizabeth Smyth had a tough tussle on mat 3. After fighting their way to a 9-5 lead, the unfortunate loss of a 5 on the 9th end left them 1 down going into the last end. To their credit they picked themselves up and got 1 shot in the last end to get a 10 all draw.

Half time score Armagh 38-21 East Antrim

The second half kicked off on mat 4 with Flo McNally's rink of Ann Crozier, Goretti Garvey and Jean Hawthorne playing excellent bowls and a big count of 7 on the 3rd end saw Flo's rink race off to a 15-5 win.

Elizabeth Lavery, Rosemary Beattie, Leslie Strain and Rachel Cassells had a tough battle on mat 5. The Armagh rink battled hard but unfortunately lost out 3-9 to a on form East Antrim rink.

On rink 6 Pauline Beattie's rink of Margaret Dempster, Christina Breen and Daphne Marshall produced another superb display running out to a 20-0 lead after 8 ends, with East Antrim getting 1 on the 9th end and Armagh adding a further 4 on the last end, the Armagh rink enjoyed a 24-1 win.

Final Score: Armagh 80-36 East Antrim

Armagh Ladies Get Revenge

Congratulations to the Armagh Ladies today on beating the defending champions Oriel by 44 shots in the opening round of the Ladies Interzone.

Armagh knew they had to 'up' their game after a disappointing performance in last years final and thats just exactly what they did.
On mat 1 Oriel had no answer to Elizabeth Smyth's rink of Agnes Crozier, Ann Patton and Hilary Agnew. The Armagh rink played excellent bowls throughout and proved far to strong for J Roullier's rink and ran away with a 21-3 victory.
On mat 2 Mary Livingstone, Rosemary Beattie, Sandra Whittle and Rachel Cassells had a slow start and after 5 ends were 1-7 down against B Cunningham and her rink. The Armagh ladies never gave up and fought their way back to come away with an excellent 9-7 win.
Mat 3 saw a tight tussle between Armagh's Marlene Hobson, Michelle wright, Diane Agnew and May Cassells who took on Oriel's R Brennan. With good bowls played by both rinks, nothing could separate the 2 rinks after 10 ends ending up 9-9 draw, leaving Armagh with a 20 shot lead at the break.

Half Time
Armagh 39-19 Oriel

After a brilliant performance from Armagh's 1st half rinks all Armagh had to do was to keep things tight..but instead the pulled out the stops to add a further 24 shots to the final score.
On mat 4 Flo McNally's rink of Ann Crozier, Goretti Garvey and Jean Hawthorne took on Emma Colgan and her rink. After 9 ends Flo was leading 9-5 but a lift of 7 in the last end saw Flo's quartet ending up 16-5 winners.
Christina Breen, Elizabeth Lavery, Daphne Marshall and Pauline Beattie took on Carol McMahon and her rink on mat 5. The Armagh Ladies proved too strong for the Oriel rink and with the help of a 6 on the 7th end the Armagh foursome came away with a 13-2 victory with 2 ends to spare.
The final game of the day was between Catherine McMillen and her rink of Sophia Minish, Linda Milligan and Sadie White against Patricia Hanlon's quartet. Catherine and her rink played excellent bowls and had a tight battle with the Oriel rink but finished 8-6 up with an end to spare giving Armagh a fantastic 44 shot victory 76-32.

It was Armagh Ladies turn for revenge this year but the game was played in great spirit and in a great sporting manor and that was a credit to both teams.

Armagh will now travel away to East Antrim on Sat 30th November.

Armagh win Charity Zone Event

(From Armagh Zone on Facebook)

Congratulations to both Armagh Ladies and Mens teams today on winning the Charity Zone Event against West Down Zone.
The ladies kicked off the action in Loughbrickland Presbyterian Church Hall with Catherine McMillen's rink taking on West Downs Lynn Martin on mat 1. Catherine and her rink of Margaret Dempster, Linda Milligan and Hilary Agnew all played excellent bowls to race off to an early lead and never looked back and eventually won 13-4.
Mat 2 saw Agnes Crozier, Sophia Minish, Leslie Strain and Elizabeth Smyth meeting the ever dangerous Angela Cannaway. After 9 ends nothing could separate the 2 rinks but Angela managed to lift a count of 3 on the last end to give the West Down rink a 11-8 win.
On Mat 3 Rachel Cassells and her rink Diane Bell, Rosemary Beattie and Sandra Whittle eased their way to a 11-4 victory over Patricia Martins rink.
At the half way stage Armagh were leading 32-19
Christina Breen, Ann Patton, Daphne Marshall and Pauline Beattie all played excellent bowls and stormed their way to a 17-4 win over the experienced Bernie Conlan.
Flo McNally and her rink Ann Crozier, Greta Garvey, Jean Hawthorne had a slow start against Ann Poland, but after a count of 6, Flo never looked backed and ran out 15-7 winners.
Marlene Hobson, Michelle Wright, May Cassells and Diane Agnew had a tight encounter with Evelyn Robb. The ever reliable Armagh foursome played well throughout and came away with a 9-5 win.
Final Score West Down 35-73 Armagh
It was a great performance on the day by Armagh Ladies and they once again retained the 'Ivan Marshall Memorial Cup' for the fourth consecutive year.

The men took centre stage next with Armagh looking to regain the 'Michael Catney Memorial Cup' which they narrowly lost out on last year.
The returning Martin Trainor and his team mates Pat Garvey, Stevie McCall and David Beattie had a great game with West Downs Robert Kidd. Nothing could split the two rinks after 10 ends with the game ending up in a 10 all draw.
Paul Whittle, Colin Deering, Terry Mulholland and Mark Sproule came up against West Downs Cecil Dillion. Mark's rink fought hard and eventually came away with a 6 shot victory 14-9.
Eddie Campbell's West Down rink came up against Aidan Corrigan and his rink William Gilpin, Sean Breen and Kieran Trainor. Again there wasn't much separating these two rinks but Aidan managed to seal 10-6 win after 10 ends.
At the halfway stage Armagh had their noses in front with a 9 shot lead 34-25.
The second half got underway with Paul Moffett, Nigel Uprichard, Gary Culbert and Alan Roberts taking on John Martin. The Armagh rink stormed off to a 6-0 lead and after a mini fight back from West Down, Alan guided his rink to a 9-5 victory.
Chris Trainor, George Crothers, Jal Richardson and Andrew Leckey found tough opposition in West Downs Johnny Wilson. The Armagh rink fought hard throughout but found themselves 2 down going into the last end. The Armagh rink were lying 2 for the draw with only Johnny's last bowl to come. The West Down skip played the perfect running shot to give him a 11-7 win over the Armagh rink.
The final game of the day was between Armagh's Jim Hendren, Chris Mulholland, Raymond Hunter and Joe Beattie who faced Alan Johnston and his rink. Joe's rink started off well and were leading 5-3 after 4 ends, then a count of 7 on the 5th end for the Armagh foursome gave the Armagh rink the breathing space they needed and they eased to a 14-9 victory.
Final Score West Down 50-64 Armagh

After a great days bowling, a cheque was presented to the Marie Currie Cancer Nurses Charity for a grand total of £2400. A big thank you must go out to all players and non players who raised this fabulous amount for a very worthy cause.

St Marks Win Club Championships

Congratulations to St Marks Portadown on becoming the 2013 Club Champions beating defending champions Cookstown Parochial by 4 shots in the final.

St Marks had reached the final stages by beating Cooley, Larne Falcons, Tamlaght and 1st Ahoghill, setting up a semi final clash with Benvarden from North Eastern Zone.
St Marks edged in front early on in the game and held on to eventually win by 8 shots.

With Cookstown Parochial beating Redeemer in the other semi final, St Marks would now face the defending champions in the final.

The final was hard fought over all 3 mats with both teams playing excellent bowls. St Marks took the lead early but with no more than 3 or 4 shots in the game, the final was far from over.
Cookstown fought back and reduced the deficit to 1 shot but St Marks held their nerve over the remaining ends and added a further 3 shots to eventually win by 4 shots.

Zone League Round Up

St. Mark’s have retained the Zone League Division 1 title despite losing their last game against Armagh GC on Friday evening. Their previous loss was against Drumgor in early January but an impressive run of 12 straight wins scoring 77 out of a possible 84 points meant they had the title wrapped up before the Armagh GC game.

Drumgor capped off a good season by securing runners up spot finishing 1 point ahead of Armagh GC.

At the other end of the table Portadown GC will be returning to Division 2 after only 1 season in the top flight. It looks like they will be joined by St. John’s Moira who failed to get the 1 point they needed to stay up in their last game against Waringstown (result to be confirmed).

Kilmore have again won division 2. There was a tight battle for runners up with Tandragee GC edging it from Mullavilly and St. Columba’s. Mullavilly finished third on shot difference.
