International Open 2011

The following is from Craig Burgess, organiser of the 2011 International Open.

Hello,

I am pleased to annouce that the International Short Mat Open will once again be going ahead. It will again be on Easter weekend but please note the change of venue.

We have been looking for a new venue and have last night agreed to move to Havering Indoor Bowling Club. The facilities are first class and we hope you can join us for the biggest money competition in Short Mat Bowls. The venue is 40 minutes from Stanstead airport so ideal for people flying in.

For those who did not attend the 1st event in April we had 38 triples and 32 fours from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Belgium & Sweden in what was truly a world class event. If you have not read the report from Short Mat International i would recommend that you take a look. It was a great weekend.

This season we will be changing the format to fours and pairs as many thought this would enable them to make up teams a lot easier.

We will also be running a plate for both comps at no extra cost due to the popularity of the fours plate this year.

Players will be getting at least 4 games in both competitions as there will be a Round Robin Stage before we go to the knockout stages, same as last year.

In the fours teams will be in a group of 5. The top 2 will qualify for the main comp with the 3rd and 4th placed sides going into the plate. The team finishing bottom will be emliminated. Games will be played over 8 ends in the Round Robin, 10 ends in the knockout stages

In the pairs teams will be in a group of 4. The top 2 will qualify for the main comp with the 3rd and 4th placed sides going into the plate. Games will be played over 10 ends in the Round Robin, 12 in the Knockout stages

I have attached the entry form with this email but should you have any further queries please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Hotel deals will be posted as soon as we have them. All of the latest new will be appearing on the following website
www.shortmatplayerstour.com

Thanks again for the support over the past year with getting this off the ground and hope to see you all in 2011.

Kind Regards

Craig Burgess

The Zone League fixtures for 2010-11 have been released and are now online. Tullysaran and St. Anthony's get the ball rolling in Division 1 on Thursday 23 September. I would appreciate if clubs could check their fixtures on the website to make sure they're all correct.

There's a new feature on the site - the "What's On Guide". This is designed to show what's on around the Zone and elsewhere. There'll be a short 4 week version on the front page of the site with a link to the full version. I'd appreciate it if clubs could send me relevant dates, e.g. Zone Cup, tournament etc. so that they can be included in the guide.

Michael Catney - a sad loss

St. Anthony's and Armagh Zone has lost a friend in Michael Catney, who passed away on 5 August after a short illness. Michael was a tireless worker for Armagh Zone and was a member of both the Zone and League Committees. He also was Zone Chairman on several occasions. He played on Armagh Mens Interzone and was a stalwart in St. Anthony's club right from their inception. He will be sadly missed around the Zone. Our thoughts are with Michael's family and St. Anthony's at this sad time.

Joe selected for Ireland

Drumgor's Joe Beattie has again been selected for the Irish Team to play in this seasons British Isles Championship in the Isle of Man on 20 November. He is playing second in Lisburn's Raymond Stubbs' rink.

Once again the tournament raised a substantial amount for charity with a cheque for £3,000 presented to Ward 4 South in Craigavon Area for the purchase of new monitors.

Well done to all involved.

Down to the wire

The race for the Fane Valley Division 1 title will finally be decided next
Friday evening in Carelton Street, Portadown when St Mark's play their
final game against Waringstown. Last night reigning champions St.
Anthony's beat title contenders St. Saviour's collecting 6 points in their
last game (league table will be updated over the weekend). This puts them
4 points ahead of St. Mark's so basically St. Mark's need to beat
Waringstown to win the league.

One certainty however is that Queen Street will be playing in Division 2
next year. The Lurgan club were beaten in Tullysaran last night which
finally sealed their fate. Either Kilmore or St. Partick's Maralin will
join them.

Portadown Golf Club have secured the Division 2 title. St. John's Moira
look favourites to join them in the top division next year, but given the
unpredictability of the results on division 2, nothing can be taken for
granted.

David wins Friendship Singles

Drumgor's David Beattie claimed this season's friendship singles title
after a great night's bowling in Milltown Parish Hall last night. He beat Alan Cassells from Queen
Street (i.e. me!!!) in what was a high scoring final. With 3 ends left
David was 10-9 down but a 4 and a single over the next 2 ends gave him the
title.

Results (Q/F onwards):

Quarter Finals

Barbara Wilson (Cladymore) beat Laurence McCarten (Armagh Pres The Mall)
Alan Cassells (Queen Street) beat Sean Trainor (St. Anthony's)
Andrew Leckey (St. Mark's) beat Noel Wilson (Waringstown)
David Beattie (Drumgor) beat Kenny Nelson (Moira Pres)

Semi Finals

Alan Cassells beat Barbara Wilson
David Beattie beat Andrew Leckey

Final

David Beattie beat Alan Cassells

David played excellent bowls all evening and was a worthy winner. For me
it was great getting to a final again. It brought back memories!!

Many thanks to the Milltown club for the use of their facilties and the
excellent supper.

Sad news

I'm sad to report that Ivan Marshall, the Fane Valley League Chairman, passed away today (Sunday 7 March). Ivan was a well respected member of the zone and played for Armagh Golf Club of which he was secretary. He previously served on the Zone Committee and represented Armagh at Interzone level. Our thoughts are with Ivan's wife Daphne and the family circle at this sad time.

Last end heartache for Armagh

It was an advert for the game of short mat bowls and with 2 bowls of the 2010 Mens Interzone final left to play Armagh and Mid Ulster were level. With 3 shots against Armagh skip Joe Beattie struck the head, but the jack went to a Mid Ulster bowl, and as a result Armagh failed to retain their title by the narrowest possible margin.

Armagh had been behind for most of the game. They were 5 down at half time and with 3 ends left in the second half were 10 down. All looked lost at that stage but a great effort over those last 3 ends set up the grandstand finish. Sadly it wasn' t to be but the locals played their part in the best final for some time.

Rink scores were as follows:

A Roberts 8 v M Wilson 8
D McDonald 7 v D McStravock 8
A Leckey 5 v A Paul 9

HALF TIME - Armagh 20 Mid Ulster 25

M Trainor 10 v C McHugh 7
J Beattie 14 v D McElroy 7
A Hughes 4 v S Quinn 10

FINAL SCORE - Armagh 48 Mid Ulster 49

Congratulations to Mid Ulster on their 9th Interzone title.

Local winners at St. Anthony's

St Anthony's tournament due to a close on Friday 26 February with local players claiming both the singles and pairs titles. In the singles final, Waringstown's Ian Perry had a narrow 7-6 over St. Anthony's Sean Conroy snr. However the home club did have success in the pairs with Martin Trainor teaming up with Armagh Golf Club's Derek Wright to score a 9-5 victory Calum Comiskey and Oliver Donaldson from Cullyhanna in the final.

Mens Interzone Final

St. Anne's Dungannon is the place to be on Saturday (27 Feb) as Armagh men

title - Northern, Lisburn and Saturday's opponents Mid Ulster being the
other 3.

Armagh have named an unchanged side in their bid for 5th Interzone title,
while Mid Ulster include 2 St. Saviour's players in their line-up.

All's set for a cracking game. The action starts at 2.00pm.

All to play for in Fane Valley Leagues

With over 2 thirds of the season gone it's all to play for in both divisions of the Fane Valley League. In Division 1 reigning champions St. Anthony's have a battle on their hands to retain their title. The champions are currently top of the table but St. Mark's are only 1½ points behind with a game in hand. St Saviour's are a further 5½ points behind, but all could change on Thursday evening when they host St. Mark's. St Anthony's have also play both these teams before the end of the season, so there may be a few twists and turns yet.

At the bottom, Queen Street's precarious existence in Division 1 looks as if it's coming to an end. The Lurgan club have only collected 6 points in their last 8 games and require at least 2 victories in their last 5 games if they are to stand any chance of staying up. The second relegation spot looks to be between Kilmore and St Pat's Maralin. Both have the same number of points but Kilmore have 3 games in hand which could be enough to see them stay up.

Portadown Golf Club seem to be heading back to Division 1 after a couple of years absence. The lead Division 2 by 10 points. However any one of about 6 or 7 clubs could grab the second promotion spot. Indeed, Mullavilly are currently in 8th spot, but if they win their game in hand on the teams above they could go joint 2nd with St. Malachy's. So its all to play for!
