Zone Cup and Shield Finals

Congratulations to Drumgor for winning the Armagh Zone Cup and St Marks for winning the Armagh Zone Shield.

Final

The Cup Final proved an very tighter affair with Drumgor holding a slender 1 shot lead at the half way stage.
It looked to be plain sailing for Drumgor as by 6 ends in the second half they had increased their lead to 8 shots.
St Saviours however fought back hard over the remaining ends and with only 1 end remaining in both mats, St Saviours had levelled the match.
A bowl over the fender by St Saviours on the last end proved crucial at this late stage as it gave Drumgor a 3 shot lead with only one mat left. Drumgor held on in the last end and only dropped 1 shot to win the cup by 2 shots.

Rink Scores
J Beattie 9-7 R McMullan
D McMahon 6-7 U Shaw
A Corrigan 9-6 R Walker
L McHugh 9-11 H McIvor

Final score
Drumgor 33 - 31 St Saviours

Shield

The shield was literally a game of 2 halves as St Anthony's took the early lead in the first half due a convincing win on one mat and went into the break with a 8 shot lead. St Marks came out all guns blazing in the second half and were able to pull back the 8 shots over the first few ends and go on to win the shield by 13 shots.

Rink Scores
G Culbert 5 - 17 N Haire
A Roberts 9 - 5 T Crawford
S McSorley 18 - 6 S Trainor
A Leckey 13 - 4 D McDonald

Final Score
St Marks 45-32 St Anthonys

Armagh success at Nationals

Armagh Zone enjoyed a double success at the Irish National Finals in Richhill Leisure Centre on Sat 22 March. St. Mark's Pauline Beattie triumphed in the Ladies Singles with a hard fought victory over Mid Ulster's Brigid Davisdon. Brigid led throughout the game and went into the last end 10-9 up, but Pauline claimed 2 on the last end to win.

It was much easier for Cranagill's Beth Whittle and St Anthony's Sean Breen in the final of the Junior Pairs. They played excellent bowls to comprehensively beat the Hastings brothers from North Down.

The Cranagill triple of Paul Whittle, Terry Mulholland and Mark Sproule narrowly missed out on making it a treble for Armagh, losing out in the triples to Lisburn's Nicky Haire on the last bowl of the game.

Cranagill did have something else to cheer about as Dayne Jordan and Mark Wilson (representing Mid Ulster) won the pairs title with a 12-6 win over Martin McAleese and David Walker.

Armagh Juniors finish third

Armagh Juniors grabbed third spot in this year’s Junior Interzone competition in yesterday’s finals day at Ardboe. Armagh, North West, Western and North Down all arrived at the Mid Ulster venue hoping to lift the title and it was North West who emerged victorious.

The open draw saw Armagh paired with North West and Western paired with North Down in the semi finals. Armagh were hoping to reach the final for the second year running, but it wasn’t to be going down by 15 shots. However the locals showed great character to bounce back in the 3rd place play off to beat Western by 5 shots.

Armagh brought a squad of 18 to the finals day, all of which got at least one game. A special mention must go to Paul and Sandra Whittle for all the hard work they have put into the Junior Zone team again this season.
